Instagram Adds New Security Tools

August 31, 2018

Instagram is the second most popular social media network in the world, second to Facebook. They recently announced new security updates in an effort to make the platform safer for its users. Instagram announced three new security features on their blog on August 28th – “About This Account”, Increasing Access to Verification and Support for Third-Party Authenticator Apps.

The “About This Account” feature will allow users to see more information about accounts with a large number of followers. It will allow users to see when the account joined Instagram, where the account is located, accounts with shared followers, ads the account is currently running and any username changes the account has made in the last year.

The Increasing Access to Verification or blue verified badge feature is a way for users to know that they are interacting with an authentic public figure, celebrity, global brand or entity. Accounts will now be able to request verification through the Instagram app directly by providing a copy of legal or business identification.

The Support for Third-Party Authenticator Apps feature is a form of two-factor authentication which helps users protect their accounts from hackers. The feature requires users to enter a random password that is sent to an approved device when users login in to their account.
