Voter Records For Sale on a Dark Web Forum

Written by Peerless Tech Solutions | October 17, 2018

Around 35 million voter records are up for sale on a dark web forum. The records include full names, phone numbers, physical addresses, voting history and other voting data. Prices for the voter lists range from $150 to $12,500 depending on the state. According to Anomali, "the disclosure reportedly affects 19 states and includes 23 million records for just three of the 19 states."

The affected states are: Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Voter registration lists are available to authorized journalists, political campaigns and academic researchers, but they are not permitted to use the lists for commercial purposes nor republish them. When unauthorized information like this is released, it increases the possibility of criminal actions like changes to online voter registrations and identity fraud.
